Edinburgh Passion Report
The Edinburgh Passion was a huge success! On a day of wonderful weather the crowds came out in great numbers, estimated at 1500 – 2000. There were great performances from many of the cast, with the critics singling out Duncan and Elaine for particular praise, as well as describing Suzanne’s achievement as “strikingly well-choreographed”! Gill Morrison took many stunning photos which can be viewed on the Easter Play website, www.easterplay.org. Yes, of course there were some minor hitches and yes, for some of the audience the change from a traditional setting to the 21st Century was a little too much to cope with. But our aim had been to reach people who might know very little of the original story and it seems to have worked well; lots of visitors to the city were among the audience as were people who just happened to be in the Gardens on the day. So huge thanks go to Suzanne our producer-director, to Joanna the stage manager, to Duncan (Jesus), to the Warehouse sound team and to all the various volunteers – cast, sound crew, stewards, construction team, caterers and more besides. For the first time we held out collection buckets as the audience dispersed and just under £486 was donated.
AGM and Thanksgiving
Please do come along to this event on 27 May at Elim Church, Holy Corner. The programme starts with a light buffet at 6.30pm followed by the Annual General Meeting at 7.00pm (This is an annual requirement that helps preserve our charitable status). At 7.30pm we’ll move into a time of praise, reports from the Play, view a slide show and hear about provisional plans for the future. The trustees (Mike Frew, John Henderson, Joan Mackel, David MacLennan and Susan Kidston hope very much that you’ll want to be part of this event – a time to get together, share memories and give thanks to God for enabling us to achieve all that we have in helping to say publicly “Christ in the heart of the city at Easter”! To help with catering please send an email to email@example.com to tell us if you plan to attend the buffet; and we hope you’ll be willing to donate £3-£5 to help with the cost.
This is your chance to help raise some money for future performances. On Saturday 20 September from 10.00am – 4.00pm there’s a Bible reading marathon in St John’s Church, Lothian Road. The aim is to raise £1000 by reading through all four Gospels. If we get to the end before 4.00pm we’ll carry on into other parts of the New Testament. You are urged to sign up to read for however long you can manage, in half hour slots. Please take part if you can. Fund-raising is always a challenge, particularly so now; many thousands of pounds of grants which funded The Edinburgh Passion are no longer available to us. You can complete the registration form from the Easter Play website www.easterplay.org. Forms will also be available at the AGM and Thanksgiving event on 27 May.
